Away from the ocean, the next best alternative is to take sights on the shoreline of a lake or large river using the "dip short technique," covered in Chapter 2 of our celestial navigation book. But away from large bodies of water, you can still take sights and find your position using an artificial horizon like this one. An excellent solution for backyard practice or finding exact position by celestial navigation when inland.
To use, fill with water (oil or molasses is even better but messier) and read the angle of the reflected sun with your sextant. Half your sextant reading is the sun's angle above the true horizon. Windproof and corrosion resistant, the reflecting surface is completely enclosed. This is a well made and packaged product, that has been in use for many years. We cover the use of this device in detail in our cel nav course.
This is a well designed item, and well made of heavy duty plastic. All parts fit into a compact case. This is a copy of an earlier military issue device.
